Sheffield’s ‘songwriter to the stars’ is going from penning hits to playing them on air in a new radio show.

Eliot Kennedy is a Grammy and Ivor award-winning songwriter who has composed some of the world’s biggest pop hits with Bryan Adams, Take That, The Spice Girls and Celine Dion. His new show on Rockingham Radio begins on Tuesday afternoon on December 1.

The community radio station covers the heart of South Yorkshire serving the Dearne Valley community and beyond.

Eliot said: “My hit with Bryan Adams, When You’re Gone [featuring Mel C] is one of the most played songs of mine on the radio, and radio has always been influential in my life. I owe it big time, so I’m really thrilled to have my own show on the airwaves.

“I think radio is a really intimate way of talking directly to an audience. As well as some of the songs that I love and have influenced me, I’m sure I’ll be sharing a few anecdotes about my 25-year career in the music industry too.”

Known for developing the careers of major boy and girl bands, Kennedy’s first no.1 hit was Take That’s Everything Changes, co-written with Gary Barlow. His first global hit was the Spice Girls’ Say You’ll Be There. With gigs and events postponed, Eliot wanted to remain connected to fans.

Eliot said: “It’s been a really tough year for so many of us. There’s a lot of self-reflection going on, I think lockdown has made us all re-evaluate what’s important in life, and human connection is first on the priority list. So, this show is for everyone out there who needs some good tunes, good chat and something to warm up the soul this winter.”

Milestone hits, co-written with his longstanding song writing partner Bryan Adams, include Never Gonna Break My Faith with Aretha Franklin and Mary J Blige, which won a Grammy. The song hit the number one spot on the Gospel Digital Song Sales chart in the States this July after being reclaimed by the Black Lives Matter movement.

Eliot has also been busy during lockdown penning his own album, A Yacht Named Sue which will be launched in the New Year. His first single from the album, My Destiny, a funky up-tempo pop track, has received critical acclaim.

Eliot has written and produced for S Club, Five, Blue and Billy Piper. Picture of You for Boyzone won him an Ivor Novello. He also worked as a Talent Director on ITV’s the X-Factor, where he mentored finalists in the show, and has written smash-hit Broadway musicals with Gary Barlow. Kennedy is famed in Sheffield as a big-hearted local hero, known for his annual charity concerts in his hometown.

Eliot added: “I’m hoping people will tune into the show, we need connection more than ever before and I hope my show spreads a little comfort to people stuck at home.”
