A young woman from Barnsley with a passion for animals has secured her dream job at a South Yorkshire theme park.
Rebecca Dawson (23) who lives in Penistone with her parents, has just finished a wildlife conservation with zoo biology degree at the University of Salford and is the new animal care assistant at Gulliver’s Valley in Rotherham.
The Rotherham resort includes a growing farmyard area which is proving to be really popular with visitors, young and old. It currently boasts llamas, goats, turkeys, rabbits, ducks, guinea pigs, ponies and sheep but there are plans for more animals to join the park soon including cows, and it is Rebecca, and her colleague Clara’s, job to make sure the animals are well looked after.
Rebecca said: “I have just always had such a passion and love for animals which led me to do my degree in zoology and I am now doing a masters in animal behaviour at Manchester Metropolitan University. When I saw this job come up, I knew it was the perfect fit for me.
“We make sure all the lovely animals are all fed and watered, and it goes without saying there is lots of cleaning involved! But the best bit is definitely the cuddles and I have to say the ponies are my favourite as they are so sweet and calm and lovely to work with.
“Animals in general are just so easy – they don’t talk back and you know straight away if they like you! We have a daily routine with certain things like feeding and when we put them away for the night so the animals feel secure and know what happens each day.
“A typical day for me involves getting in early and giving all the animals a quick check over. We then start cleaning and do the morning feeds for those that have them and then it’s more cleaning until lunch followed by the best bit of treats, brushing, cuddles and general fun until the evening feeds.
“Our visitors absolutely love them – the goats are very pesky and jump about all over so are great to watch but harder to manage for us! We sell goat food now so people enjoy feeding them and watching their reactions. The farm area has grown in size recently as well which has been great and we’ve had some really lovely feedback from customers.
“I just want to make sure all our animals are well cared for and have a really happy life. They have all become really important to me and everyone here at Gulliver’s Valley. I’m really enjoying my Gulliver’s animal adventure so far!”
