Ben Schmidt from Rotherham Golf Club has been named in the initial Great Britain and Ireland squad ahead of this year’s Walker Cup against the United States of America.
And Ben has also retained his place in the England Golf Men’s Squad for 2021.
At 18, Schmidt is the youngest of the 20 players who will form the Men’s and Men’s ‘A’ squads.
After Covid-19 restrictions disrupted the 2020 campaign, it is hoped that public health concerns will ease to allow players to once again compete in team events.
England won the Home Internationals when last staged at Lahinch GC in Ireland in 2019 and are aiming to defend the crown at Royal Dornoch GC in Scotland in April.
The 48th Walker Cup is set to be played at Seminole, Florida on 8 and 9 May 2021.
From Tommy Fleetwood to Justin Rose, the Walker Cup has witnessed many stars of the game, and selection to play in the historic match is often regarded as the highlight of an amateur’s career.
Teams consisting of the leading amateur players from Great Britain and Ireland and the United States go head-to-head biennially for the chance to get their hands on the famous trophy.
Following on, the European Men’s Team Championship is planned for July at Vasatorps GC in Sweden.
