Tour guide Mark Barthrop has come up with a tasty fundraiser for Wentworth Woodhouse, and it has already sold out!
Having taken on the property, The Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust (WWPT) launched a £150m masterplan for the Rotherham stately home in 2018 which aims to bring new life to the redundant buildings on the 83-acre site.
The first step for regeneration includes more tours and events at the Grade I listed mansion house.
This week sees a wine-tasting and tapas night in the mansion’s Long Gallery.
Mark’s partner, Tony Atkinson, a house volunteer and keen cook, will be making six Spanish dishes ranging from chorizo to churros.
Matthew Thompson from Lightfoot Wines in Wentworth Village is providing six fine wines for tasting.
Connoisseur Matthew has hand-selected whites, sparkling and roses from around the world to pair with Tony’s tapas, and will be giving a talk on each one.
The £35 a head event on Friday October 15 will also feature a fascinating talk about the mansion, the Marquesses of Rockingham, the Earls Fitzwilliam, their families and staff by village historian Jonathan Addy.
“I’m in the Trust’s fundraising team and Tony is a volunteer who helps with the afternoon teas. This is our first fundraising event,” said Mark . “We both love good food and wine so we decided to organise the kind of night we would enjoy.”
“Everyone is giving their time for free and there will be plenty to eat and delicious wines to try.”
Having sold out, the pair are already planning their next themed food and drink night which will be whiskey tasting with canapes.
